MANILA – Philippine Foreign Secretary, Albert del Rosario is “fully responsible” for failing to answer a letter sent by the brother of Sultan Jamalul Kiram III to its President Benigno Aquino in 2010 which stated the Sulu Sultanate’s desire to take part in the peace discussion with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

Philippine Inquirer reported the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) as saying that the “lost letter” sent by Raja Mudah Agmibuddin Kiram was found kept in the DFA office.

Raja Muda is currently heading the Sulu team at Lahad Datu where attacks on Malaysian security forces were launched last week.

“The lost letter written by Raja Muda Agbimuddin Kiram to the President a few days before Aquino took his oath in June 2010 was found at DFA. The Secretary  is fully responsible for overlooking it,” stated the DFA in a statement.

The statement however did not explain the content of the letter and how it was “lost in a maze of bureaucracy “.

In answering to the issue brought up by the Raja Muda on February 26, Aquino said that : “There is no intention of ignoring the letter”.

The Sultan Kiram’s family stated that the followers had decided to make a claim on Sabah last month after they were excluded from the peace talk between the Philippine government and MILF.

Both sides had made a progress last year with the signing of a framework agreement for the establishment of the Bangsamoro entity.

However, the DFA said the actions taken by the Kiram family in Sabah “should not affect the peace process with MILF”.
