Former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad warned Malaysians not to vote the Pakatan Rakyat led by Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim into power for fear that the Pakatan might try to cling to power “forever”.

Mahathir also said if the Pakatan toppled the BN, that would be the last Malaysians would see of the coalition that has led the country for 5 decades.

Pakatan leaders immediately slammed Mahathir for his “illogical” remarks.

“It is most ironical given that it is Dr M and BN who are the ones doing everything possible to stay in power. If Pakatan wins, it will surely do its best to be re-elected in the 14th general election. That goes without saying,” PKR vice president Tian Chua told Malaysia Chronicle.

“As for the BN, Mahathir may be right in that Malaysians may never see BN again if it loses GE-13 but that would be because of the BN’s own collapse. It is already cracking up. We don’t expect the BN to survive GE13 intact regardless of the outcome of the vote,”

On the chopping board

Indeed, due to UMNO’s over-dominance and bullying ways, the other 13 partners in the BN have found themselves reduced to being mere puppets without meaningful say or roles to play in the nation’s governance and development.

That has led to the near annihilation of BN stalwarts such as MIC, Gerakan and MCA.The East Malaysian component parties have already begun hedging their bets, with some senior leaders including two MPs and a Senator already having resigned from the BN.

In GE13, UMNO is expected to be badly hit as its core Malay electorate turn to the Pakatan parties of PKR and PAS, frustrated by the massive corruption and abuse of power by the UMNO leaders.

At function in Lembah Pantai, Mahathir told a group of government retirees to appreciate the BN’s “good governance” over the past 55 years.

“I know that some of us feel that, why not try something else. Then in five years, we can change again to BN. But no way… once they gain power, they will do everything possible, and we cannot change again to BN… by then, it will be too late,” Mahathir said in his speech.
