SUBANG JAYA residents were rudely awakened by the early morning explosion at the Empire Shopping Gallery yesterday.

There was damage to outlets in the mall and residents living nearby were in a state of shock.

StarMetro spoke to some residents and Kelwant Kaur, 66, a resident at SS17 said the explosion was so strong that even residents from neighbouring areas felt the jolt.

She said the ceiling of her son’s room cracked because of the incident.

Waiting for relocation: Empire Hotel guests gathered outside after the blast.

Safety measure: Scaffoldings have been put up in front of the mall to keep people out.

“We were rudely awakened by the loud bang about 3am. I noticed that my room window had sprung open by itself.

“Thinking that it was just loud thunder and there was no rain, we went back to sleep,” she said.

It was only in the morning that Kelwant found out about the explosion from her daughter, who was on her way to work.

She later went to the shopping mall to check out the damage with her maid.

Another SS17 resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, thought it was an earthquake.

He was still awake as he was watching a live telecast of a football match when the explosion happened.

One of the outlets badly damaged by the explosion, Starbucks, issued a statement saying that the explosion was not originated by Starbucks.

The statement said Starbucks did not use gas tanks in any outlet, adding that no employees and customers of Starbucks Empire Gallery was injured in the incident.

Starbucks said they were still waiting for the full report from the complex management and the Fire and Rescue Department.
