MB demands Jais explanation on raid

PETALING JAYA: The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) has been ordered to prepare a report justifying its raid on a multiracial dinner held at a church amid public criticism over its high-handed action.

Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said he hoped to meet Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC) senior pastor Dr Daniel Ho as soon as the report was ready.

“I have contacted Ho and conveyed the state government’s regret over the incident,” Khalid said in a statement issued by his press secretariat yesterday.

“The state has instructed Jais to provide a full report detailing the incident, including justification for its actions that night.”

Khalid said the state government was open to dialogue on the harmonious co-existence among different religious communities.

“(We) assure the people of Selangor that the state government fully respects the freedom of religion and the rights of religious groups to manage their affairs,” he said.

Separately, Barisan Nasional leaders rapped the state government over the raid.

Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said the action was inappropriate.

“If Hasan Ali is not going to answer for the raid, Selangor might as well get rid of his Islamic affairs exco portfolio,” he said in a tweet yesterday.

He added Jais comes under the Selangor government and also reports to the Selangor Islamic Council which PAS’ Hasan chairs.

MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong yesterday tweeted: “Sad to hear that. The MB and exco Hasan should be responsible for this incident.”

Meanwhile, PAS vice-president Salahuddin Ayub said that Jais must publicly explain why the church was raided.

He added when Jais conducted raids, its officers must be polite and inform their intention to the organisations concerned.

Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad condemned the raid, saying the action was wrong.

“They (Jais) cannot just storm into a church or any religious institution without having the facts.

“I was told there were no Muslims present at the dinner. How can they have such a raid?

It is very disrespectful,” said the PAS MP yesterday.

Khalid described the raid as an “embarrassment to Muslims”.

He added that Jais should apologise for its action before the matter triggered any religious tension.

PKR vice-president Tian Chua said although Jais was under the jurisdiction of the Selangor government, it operated independently and was co-ordinated by Jakim under the Federal Government.

“We hope this intolerance will stop,” he said.

It was reported that a muhibbah thanksgiving dinner held in the spirit of 1Malaysia at the church on Wednesday was marred when Jais enforcement officers entered the hall following complaints that Malays were present.

DUMC’s Ho said the Jais officers arrived at 10pm together with the police and questioned several people present.
