PAS demands fair probe into second death fall
by Harakahdaily
KUALA LUMPUR, Apr 7: PAS’s Salahuddin Ayub (pic), who is a member of a special committee of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), has vowed to ensure that the Commission conduct a fair and thorough investigation into the death of a Selangor Customs officer yesterday.

Ahmad Sarbani Mohamed, 56, assistant director of Selangor Customs Department, was found dead with his body sprawled on the ground floor of the MACC office in Jalan Cochrane Wednesday morning. Sarbani had earlier been hauled up for investigation into graft involving the Customs.

Salahuddin, who is also PAS vice president and Kubang Kerian member of parliament, said he would be holding discussion with all parties involved to ensure a fair investigation.

Expressing grief over the incident, which came hot on the heel of another similarly mysterious deathfall involving DAP officer Teoh Beng Hock at the Shah Alam MACC office, Salahuddin called for a transparent investigation into the case with proper explanation by MACC.

“I will ensure this will be conducted transparently and given a proper explanation by MACC. We are worried especially so when the death of Teoh Beng Hock is still under investigation at the Royal Commission of Inquiry, and this latest death certainly gives a very negative perception about MACC,” he said.

It has been understood that Sarbani had been detained on April 1 on allegation of grafts and released the next day at noon. He then returned to the MACC office at about 8.30 am yesterday.

An investigating officer claimed that he had asked Sarbani to wait while he looked for the case files, only to find that Sarbani was no longer at the lobby. His body was found sprawled on a badminton court around 10.15 am.

MACC chief Abu Kassim Mohamed has given assuarance of a thorough investigation. Prime Minister Najib Razak however has ruled out the setting up a royal commission of inquiry, saying that “police and MACC should be allowed to investigate first.”
